Do I need to be able to read music and lyrics? We learn all our songs by ear. We'll learn each song bit by bit, through call and response - so I'll sing a line, then you'll all sing it back to me. We learn gradually and gently, making sure everyone feels confident.
Do I have to be a "good" singer? So many of us have lost confidence in our singing voices, but Singing Mamas is a safe space where everyone can enjoy singing. We always sing as a group, so you'd never be asked to sing alone. The more we sing together, the more you'll build up your confidence in your voice.
Is there parking at the venue? The Jam House is in a residential area, and as it is close to the station, Lincoln Crescent has a limit of 1 hour for street parking. There is space for a couple of cars on the drive, and then there is unlimited free street parking just around the corner on Dells Lane (2 min walk).
Can I bring my child along? Yes, our groups are planned with mums in mind, so babies and children are welcome to come along. I always bring comfy mats and quilts and some toys and books. You're welcome to bring snacks and quiet toys or activities to keep busy toddlers and older ones entertained. They are also of course very welcome to join in with the singing! If your little one needs feeding or changing then feel free to do whatever they need during the session. Please never worry or feel uncomfortable about your child making noise!
Is Singing Mamas just for women? Do I have to be a mother? We are a women only support space, but you don't need to be a mum to join. We are for all women: mums of babies, little ones, big ones and grown ups; pregnant women; Grandmas; Aunties; women trying to conceive; childless women; women who are childfree by choice; and anyone who has lived experience as a female.
Should I feel guilty doing a class that's aimed at me, rather than my child? Absolutely not! You are so worthy of some tlc and time doing something special for you. And your little one will get so much out of it too. Singing to and with your child has so many benefits for their wellbeing and development, such as calming them and helping them feel safe, building their language skills and rhythm, and expanding their memory. It releases oxytocin (the love hormone) and increasing the loving bond between you both.
What kind of songs do you sing? I choose all of the songs with our wellbeing and enjoyment in mind. They are all fairly short and simple, and can then be added to with harmonies, or sung as a round, to create a gorgeous sound. The lyrics will usually be inspiring, uplifting, moving, or resonate with our experiences as women. We will usually sing 3 - 6 songs during a session. Some will become familiar, and some will be brand new that week. Learning new songs is great for our cognitive function, and when we've conquered a song, we feel a great sense of achievement. Singing songs that we've learnt before and we feel more confident with helps us feel safe, and we can relax in to them and enjoy the sound. Check out my reels on Instagram and Facebook to hear some examples of songs we might sing.
What if I have dietary requirements or food allergies? We always have a break for a cuppa, some cake or something yummy to eat, and a chat. If you have any dietary needs or allergies, or your child has any allergies, then let me know. I'll always endeavour to make sure you have a sweet treat that you can eat. I ask that anyone bringing snacks for their little ones avoids nuts and foods that could be a choking hazard. If there are any severe allergies I will share this information with the group to ensure nobody brings this food in to the space.
